New Patients - Your First Visit
At the first visit to the orthodontist, you will meet with Dr. Girish Deshpande to determine your orthodontic needs and the treatment options available. If treatment is indicated, diagnostic records are made to determine the best course of treatment. The records can be taken at the initial visit or an appointment can be set up to take the records at the patient's convenience. Complete diagnostic records typically include a medical/dental history, clinical examination; plaster study models of the teeth, digital photos of the patient's face and teeth, and digital X-rays. This information is reviewed by Dr. Deshpande and is used to develop a custom treatment plan for each patient. These records are also helpful in tracking the progress of treatment as the teeth move under orthodontic care.
After your records have been evaluated, Dr. Deshpande will discuss your treatment plan with you in detail and answer any questions you may have. He will also discuss the different options that you have to straighten your teeth; including Invisalign, ceramic brackets, the AcceleDent System, lingual braces or self-ligating brackets. At the consultation, the cost for your particular case will be discussed and financial arrangements will be reviewed. It takes 2-3 appointments to begin your orthodontic treatment; however, in many cases, we can start at this consultation appointment.
How Long Is The Treatment?
Treatment time obviously depends on each patient's specific orthodontic problem. In general, treatment times range from 12 to 30 months. The average time frame a person is in braces is approximately 20-24 months.
Is It Going To Hurt?
Generally, attaching the braces to the teeth do not hurt. No anesthetic is required during the procedure. During the first few days after you get your braces and after adjustments, some discomfort can be expected, especially when chewing. Teeth may also be sore after certain visits. In these situations, pain medications such as Tylenol or Advil will ease the discomfort. However, after most visits, patients do not feel any soreness at all.
