About Orthodontics - Emergency Care

True orthodontic emergencies are very rare, but if there’s an urgent issue we’re always available to help you. After regular office hours, please call us at 905.275.6784. Please leave your contact information and a detailed message, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

For other problems that you’re not able to handle yourself, please call our office to schedule an appointment.

Brushing and Flossing

It’s important to brush and floss regularly during orthodontic treatment so your teeth and gums stay healthy. You may also require more frequent visits to Dr. Girish Deshpande for check-ups or regular cleanings.

Sore and Tender Teeth

You may feel general soreness when you first get your braces put on, or after coming in for adjustments. This may last for 3-5 days and will be more noticeable with biting pressure.

The soft surfaces in your mouth may take a couple of weeks to toughen up and adjust to the potentially irritating surfaces of your braces. If your braces or wires are causing irritation, you may apply a piece of soft wax or silicone on the problem area. Additional orthodontic wax or silicone is also available at most medical pharmacies.

Loose Teeth

It is perfectly normal for some of your teeth to feel loose. They need to loosen in order to move into their newly aligned positions, and they will become stable again at the end of treatment.

Loose Brackets

This is not entirely uncommon, but you will need to make an appointment with Dr.Girish Deshpande so we can fix the problem.

Protruding Tie-Wire

You can sometimes tuck the tie-wire away, perhaps under your archwire, using the eraser end of a pencil. This solution may last until your next appointment, but if you have continued irritation place a piece of wax over the wire and make a quick appointment with Dr. Girish Deshpande.

Loose Archwire

Your Archwire may move and pop out of an end bracket, causing it to stick out and poke the inside of your mouth. Place a piece of wax on the wire to hold it against the bracket, and make a quick appointment with us to get the problem fixed.

Missing Band

If an elastic band comes loose and goes missing, you may make an appointment with Dr.Girish Deshpande.

Orthodontic Treatment for Athletes

If you play sports, it’s important that you talk to Dr. Girish Deshpande about special precautions that you will need to take. A protective mouthguard will be recommended if you play sports like soccer, basketball, baseball or skiing etc. A mouthguard that fits around your braces will provide the best protection.

If an accident occurs involving your face, immediately check your mouth and your braces or retainer. If any teeth have loosened or there’s damage to your appliances, please contact us as soon as possible to let us know. In the meantime, treat your discomfort as you would treat any general soreness.
